Sweetheart ferrets help Aquarium
celebrate Valentine’s Day

Fabio and Farrah Ferret have put the finishing touches on the Valentine’s Day decorations at their home at the Atlantic City Aquarium, where visitors can receive a Valentine “signed” by the couple 2-2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14.
The Atlantic City Aquarium offers a fun and educational look into more than 100 varieties of fish and marine animals. It is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily in Historic Gardner's Basin. The Freedom Quilt is on display in the Noyes Museum of Art Young-at-Art Gallery throughout February.

Noyes program celebrates freedom

      “Lincoln’s Birthday Party – What Freedom Means to Me” will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Noyes Museum of Art on Lily Lake Road, off Route 9 in Galloway Township. The free Creative Sparks Program is open to ages 6-12. Families are welcome to attend the program, held in honor of Lincoln’s 201st birthday, to sing “Happy Birthday,” eat cake and paint a section for a giant paper Freedom Quilt. Participants may add their section to the quilt or take it home.
     The Freedom Quilt is made up of over 100 four-inch squares created at Atlantic County Library programs and at Mainland High School last spring. It is being displayed in the Noyes Museum of Art Young-at-Art Gallery throughout February.
Books and posters from the Atlantic County Library’s 2009 “We the People: Created Equal” grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in cooperation with the American Library Association are also displayed.

Noyes presents mystical
mixed-media exhibit by 2 artists

   A mystical installation of sculptures, large-scale drawings, paintings, and works on glass will go on exhibit Jan. 21 until May 23 at the Noyes Museum of Art. In this exhibition, Suzanne Reese Horvitz and Robert Roesch present an imaginative collaboration titled “Transduction: Myths of the Sea and the Solar Boat.” The pair’s projects and themes have traveled the world and can be seen in museum collections both nationally and internationally.
     Horvitz (www.suzannehorvitz.com) will display poetic mixed-media works, glass panels and myth-like paintings, some of which include gold and silver leaf on aluminum. Her artwork often offers a mythical narrative and is done by reverse painting, screening, sand blasting and gilding on glass, aluminum or canvas. Her newest work explores mirror images and twins with translucent figures merging with text and landscape to create surrealistic and mystical effects on gilded metallic, representing dreams and the world on the wrong side of the looking glass.
     Roesch (www.robertroesch.com), head of the sculpture department at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, contributes several large-scale metal sculptures and wall works to the exhibit. His sculptures, mixed media pieces and drawings explore and define the moment between shifting realities, “the place in-between.” Roesch is intrigued by contrasting planes at their moment of intersection and the transference of energy between the two forces.
     The Noyes Museum is open 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. It is 1 1/2 miles south of Historic Smithville Village, off Route 9, on Lily Lake Road in Galloway Township. Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for seniors and students.

Absecon Lighthouse to celebrate 153rd birthday

     Absecon Lighthouse will host a celebration to honor its 153rd birthday 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15 with birthday cake and free climbs to the top of New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse. Then bring the kids for a brand-new series, “Kids Light up the Arts,”
Beginning on Sunday, Jan. 17, children can participate in a new activity series called “Kids Light up the Arts,” a two-hour art class promoting visual and performing arts 1-3 p.m. Sunday afternoons through March. The program is presented in collaboration with local artists, performers and crafters to educate and encourage children to create their own works of art, culminating with an art show.
     There will be classes in mosaics, theater and puppetry, painting and watercolors, and other disciplines. Discounts are available to Atlantic City residents and for families who wish to participate in the complete series.

     The Atlantic City Free Public Library Film Society will see and discuss “Roman Holiday,” a 1953 romantic comedy starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn, 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9. The movie is not rated and runs 118 minutes.
The classroom session 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11 will focus on a dark period in movie history with a documentary showing and discussion of “The Hollywood Blacklist.”

Carl Howell gives crooner classics a twist

     Guitarist and pianist Carl Howell will take iconic music of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s through its paces 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15 at the Eagle Theatre performing arts center in downtown Hammonton.
     Howell will reinterpret the music of Frank Sinatra and other inspirational artists in an intimate concert performance that will include classics that have left their impression throughout the years, as well as a few of his favorites.
     At 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, Howell will leave the faux big band and crooning behind to focus on a night based around original songs, friendship and collaboration when he is joined by Kevin Arena and Matt Melhado of Hammonton and Lucky Gretzinger of New York City in a jam session, also at the theater.
     It is being billed as a night of classic folk and rock tunes rejuvenated by 20-somethings who think they can reinvent the musical wheel.
     Tickets are available online now for $12 general admission and $10 for seniors and students. Tickets for both nights are $20 and can be purchased at the door Friday night.
     The Eagle Theatre is a non-profit culturally diverse performing arts center located at 208 Vine St. in Downtown Hammonton.
