Vessel safety examinations will be offered
STRATHMERE – The Strathmere Fishing and Environmental Club will sponsor a vessel U.S. Coast Guard safety examination event on Sunday, May 18 at the Whale Creek Marina in Strathmere. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 81 will perform free boat safety inspections beginning at 9 a.m.
All recreational boaters in the area are invited to this event.
One of the roles of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is to offer vessel safety checks to boaters who wish to be sure that their boats meet all federal and state safety requirements. The men and women who do these examinations are called vessel examiners, and they are specially trained and knowledgeable on the latest legal requirements for boaters.
The examiners will check for all required safety items on board your boat and if everything is present and in good working order they will award a decal to affix to the boat. If you wish, they will also gladly explain the reason for the various safety equipment requirements and explain how safety equipment works.
The vessel safety check is not a law enforcement action by the Coast Guard. The goal is to prevent boaters from getting equipment-related citations and to prevent safety-related accidents. These safety checks are meant to be an educational experience. No official report is made to any law enforcement authority.
