JCC arts festival to premier comedy film

Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center in Margate will premier the comedy “Circumcise Me” 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 3. The film is a funny and moving story of one man's quest for spiritual enlightenment against the bewildering backdrop of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Yisrael Campbell looks more like a rabbi than a comedian, but don't be fooled by the big black hat, frock coat and Hasidic side-curls. Born Chris Campbell, the son of an ex-nun and a Catholic schoolteacher, he converted to Judaism not once, but three times – Reform, Conservative and Orthodox. His spiritual journey began as a troubled teenager in Philadelphia and ended in Jerusalem among the suicide bombs of the Palestinian intifada. So what's to laugh about? It's the way he tells it.

Admission is $7. For information call Josh Cutler for information at (609) 822-1167, ext. 138, or email

‘3 Sisters’ dance play
celebrates the power of family

Jazz Rockballet, in conjunction with the Dance Arts League of Atlantic County under the direction of Ann Stein-Heemskerk, will present “3 Sisters” 7 p.m. Friday, May 29 and 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30 at the Richard Stockton College Performing Arts Center.
The music is an eclectic blend of new age, classical, jazz, pop and rock.

“The tale of how a family is separated by hard times and through determination and love is reunited will touch everyone,” said Stein-Heemskerk.

“It is a story for young and old. We will all identify with the characters and their struggle, their love and their joy,” she said. “It will make you laugh and cry. It will surprise and even get scary sometimes. Expect the unexpected!”

Stein-Heemskerk has been a driving force in dance and arts education in the South Jersey area for more than 20 years. Her Dance Arts League Outreach Program has brought dance programs and workshops to schools throughout the state. She studied dance in Philadelphia where she grew up and for seven years in New York City as a professional dancer she studied and worked with some of the great master teachers. She lived in Europe for 13 years where she choreographed for television and had a school and dance company.

In addition to Stein-Heemskerk’s work there will be choreography by Caroline Bancheri, Susan Lindsay, Debbie MacDonald and Sara Viriyayuthakorn. The cast consists of young accomplished dancers from Atlantic and Cape May counties.

“The lighting design promises to be exquisite. The costumes, original dances and technical finesses create an exhilarating experience for all,” the director said.

Tickets are $22, available at the Stockton PAC box office or by calling (609) 652-9000. For information call Stein-Heemskerk at (609) 927-5542.

JCC presents ‘My Mexican Shivah’

The Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center Festival of the Arts continues 7 p.m. Thursday, May 21 with a showing of the Jewish comedy “My Mexican Shivah.”

Set in Polanco, a Jewish quarter of Mexico City, and spoken in Spanish, Yiddish and Hebrew, "My Mexican Shivah" is a dramatic comedy about how the death of a man results in the celebration of his life.

According to Jewish belief, from the moment a Jew is born, he or she is accompanied by two angels: the angel of light and the angel of darkness. In the film, when the character Moishe, 75, passes, his family and friends gather to sit shivah, the seven-day Jewish mourning ritual. The spirit angels Aleph and Bet watch over the mourners and listen to what is said about the deceased to decide which will accompany Moishe's soul to the afterlife.

The odds are against Moishe from the beginning. Family dysfunction aside, Moishe's friends are attending for their own motives. And to make matters worse, while performing his duties, a Chevreman, a member of a sacred funeral society, is milking the family for all they're worth, charging for kosher food, slippers and other shivah goods.

Emotionally unstable and obsessed with staying young, Moishe's daughter Esther falls apart. Meanwhile, his son Ricardo's wandering eye leads him to his dead father's lover, a Catholic for whom Moishe left his family many years earlier.

Also present are Moishe's grandchildren, Galia a student at New York University, and her cousin Nicolas, a yeshivah student who lives in Israel, hiding from Mexican justice. They can't ignore their mutual attraction exacerbated by their confinement and the polarity of their values. Their passion leaves behind feelings of guilt for Nicolas and satisfies Galia's love of defiance.

Which angel will win the battle for Moishe's soul? If the shivah reveals anything, it's that Moishe's family and friends loved him with all his flaws and mystery – and most of all his spirit.

Admission is $7. The JCC Festival of the Arts is co-sponsored by the Jewish Times of South Jersey. For information call Josh Cutler at (609) 822-1167, ext. 138.

Ocean City curiosity

Hermit crab seeks shadow
for 35th year in Ocean C
ity

Martin Z. Mollusk, Ocean City’s relatively famous hermit crab, will attempt to see his shadow for the 35th time 11 a.m. Thursday, May 7 at the Moorlyn Terrace Beach amid much pomp and circumstance.

The World’s Only Wind Chimes Band, which appeared recently at Ocean City’s Doo Dah Parade and Earth Day, will perform. The relatively talented ensemble will introduce “Ode to Martin Mollusk,” a three-minute symphony for wind chimes.
“This alone is worth the price of the free admission,” noted Mark Soifer, Martin’s spiritual advisor and chef. “It is the first and only symphony ever composed for wind chimes by the talented but elusive Ocean Breeze.”

The Ocean City High School Band will play “Pomp and Circumstance” as Martin is ushered to the beach by Elvis performer Ted Prior and Suzanne Muldowney, aka Shelly the Mermaid, Underdog and numerous other characters. Prior will sing “You Ain’t Nothin’ But a Hermit Crab.”

Muldowney’s big moment will come when she leads the throngs in singing the pageant’s theme song, “Some Enchanted Morning, You May See a Tree Crab, You May See a Tree Crab across a Crowded Beach, etc.”

Others in the entourage will include Inspector Clueslow, Trash Buster, the city’s environmental litter picker-upper, and Big Mama Llama of Bready Farms in Tuckahoe. If the llama shakes her head it means Martin has seen his shadow and summer will come one week early to Ocean City. Inspector Clueslow checks with his magnifying glass to verify the llama’s decision.
Over the past 34 years, Martin has seen his shadow 33 times. Once he saw a partial shadow, and sure enough summer arrived 3½ days early. He insists on complete silence during his creep so he can concentrate on casting a shadow. Therefore there will be no texting or twittering (birds excepted) during the proceedings. All cell phones must be muted, and no conversations will be permitted.

For information call (609) 525-9300 and ask for the Big Crab.
