Noyes presents mystical
mixed-media exhibit by 2 artists
A mystical installation of sculptures, large-scale drawings, paintings, and works on glass will go on exhibit Jan. 21 until May 23 at the Noyes Museum of Art. In this exhibition, Suzanne Reese Horvitz and Robert Roesch present an imaginative collaboration titled “Transduction: Myths of the Sea and the Solar Boat.” The pair’s projects and themes have traveled the world and can be seen in museum collections both nationally and internationally.
Horvitz (www.suzannehorvitz.com) will display poetic mixed-media works, glass panels and myth-like paintings, some of which include gold and silver leaf on aluminum. Her artwork often offers a mythical narrative and is done by reverse painting, screening, sand blasting and gilding on glass, aluminum or canvas. Her newest work explores mirror images and twins with translucent figures merging with text and landscape to create surrealistic and mystical effects on gilded metallic, representing dreams and the world on the wrong side of the looking glass.
Roesch (www.robertroesch.com), head of the sculpture department at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, contributes several large-scale metal sculptures and wall works to the exhibit. His sculptures, mixed media pieces and drawings explore and define the moment between shifting realities, “the place in-between.” Roesch is intrigued by contrasting planes at their moment of intersection and the transference of energy between the two forces.

Carl Howell gives crooner classics a twist
Guitarist and pianist Carl Howell will take iconic music of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s through its paces 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15 at the Eagle Theatre performing arts center in downtown Hammonton.
Howell will reinterpret the music of Frank Sinatra and other inspirational artists in an intimate concert performance that will include classics that have left their impression throughout the years, as well as a few of his favorites.
At 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, Howell will leave the faux big band and crooning behind to focus on a night based around original songs, friendship and collaboration when he is joined by Kevin Arena and Matt Melhado of Hammonton and Lucky Gretzinger of New York City in a jam session, also at the theater.
It is being billed as a night of classic folk and rock tunes rejuvenated by 20-somethings who think they can reinvent the musical wheel.
Tickets are available online now for $12 general admission and $10 for seniors and students. Tickets for both nights are $20 and can be purchased at the door Friday night.

Vendors Wanted for Holy Spirit High School Craft Show 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. ...
Book launch with author of ‘Titanic: The Untold Story’
W. Mae Kent, author of “Titanic: The Untold Story” will sign books 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 at the Absecon Lighthouse, 31 S. Rhode Island Ave., Atlantic City.
The evening will feature a book club-style discussion with the author, light refreshments and soft spirits, and a viewing of the lighthouse’s Titanic Collection, donated to the lighthouse in 2007 and valued at over $150,000.
The book tells the fictional tale of Nathan Badeau Legarde, the only black passenger aboard the Titanic.
“This book is a work of historical fiction,” Kent said. “I did extensive research for it and was delighted to discover that there really was a black man on the Titanic, Mr. Joseph Phillipe Lemercier Laroche.”
Traveling to New Orleans to claim his inheritance, Legarde is accompanied by his French wife and their two children. He attracts the attention of some of the ship’s less tolerant passengers and gets embroiled in several altercations.
‘“Titanic: The Untold Story” has something for everyone,” said Kent. The themes portrayed in the book – love and pride, bigotry and hatred, are universal.
Kent, who is a psychotherapist, holds a master’s degree in social work and a bachelor’s degree in history. Published in March 2009, this is her second novel.
The book is available in the lighthouse gift shop for $16.99. Tickets to the event are $20; proceeds benefit continuing education programs. Call (609) 449-1360 for reservations.
For information about the novel see www.titanictheuntoldstory.com.

Written and directed by Brigantine natives Greg Santarsiero and
Mark Bernardi, “Ice Grill, USA” is a stark portrayal of the pursuit of the
American dream.
‘Ice Grill, USA’ premieres on the East Coast
After an award-winning world premiere in Los Angeles, “Ice Grill, USA,” a film written and directed by Brigantine natives Greg Santarsiero and Mark Bernardi and shot almost entirely in Atlantic City and Brigantine, is coming home to premiere in Atlantic City with a follow-up in Philadelphia.
First, “IGU” comes home to the Downbeach Film Society's Atlantic City CineFest as the opening film 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16. The film will be shown in the 13th floor screening room at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City with a reception to follow next door at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort.
The following Friday night, Oct. 23, will be the film's Philadelphia premiere as a Spotlight Screening at the FirstGlance Philly Film Fest 12. “Ice Grill, USA” will be shown 10 p.m. at the Franklin Theater at the Franklin Institute, 222 N. 20th St.
The film is a stark examination of the pursuit of the American Dream, according to its website: “Set in the multicultural landscape of Atlantic City, N.J., ‘IGU’ examines class struggle and the acquisition of status in a morally indifferent community.”
The film’s protagonist, Auggie Logan, seeks to gain the favor of neighborhood beauty Claudia Castillo. He finds himself forced to navigate the treacherous paths of the only two career options available: the black market pharmaceutical drug trade and casino hospitality services.
“Auggie is torn between the sales pitches and life philosophies of his drug dealer best friend and his corporate sellout brother at the behest of their cutthroat bosses, all the while struggling to adhere to the blue collar values championed by his father.”

‘True Jersey’ spoofs the Garden State
After years of listening to his home state of New Jersey be the brunt of jokes about everything from high taxes and pollution to political corruption and sex scandals, actor/playwright Ryan Long said a humorous play about the ironically named “Garden State” was ripe for the picking.
He and his Riddlesbrood Touring Theatre Company bring the play “True Jersey” to the Eagle Theatre in Hammonton Sept. 25.
Long is known for zany, highly improvisational productions that can be described as a riotous mix of “Saturday Night Live,” Monty Python and the Zucher Brothers of the movie “Airplane” fame. For the past five years, he and his company of actors from New Jersey and Pennsylvania have presented original, interactive comedy shows and murder mysteries throughout the Delaware Valley.
“Woody Allen once called New Jersey ‘a vast, primitive wasteland,’ said Long. “That may be true – but not when it comes to material! No wonder we have to pay to get out of Jersey but not to get in.”
Catch “True Jersey” 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25 at the Eagle Theatre, 208 Vine St. Tickets are $15 and $13. To reserve call (609) 704-5012. For information call Riddlesbrood Touring Theater Company at (609) 377-9125 or see www.Riddlesbrood.com.

‘The Virtual Immigrant’
The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey visual arts program presents its first art exhibition of the season with “The Virtual Immigrant: Photography by Annu Palakunnathu Matthew” Sept. 14-Oct. 16 in the art gallery in H113.
The series consists of lenticular photographic portraits of call center or business process outsourcing workers from the artist’s hometown of Bangalore, India. The artist calls these workers “virtual immigrants” because they are made to Westernize themselves through dress, voice, idioms, etc. during their work hours to give callers the impression that they are in the caller’s country.
Matthew and sociologist Winifred Poster will each give a visual presentation and lecture 2:30 to 4 p.m. Oct. 1 in Alton Hall (A-wing). The public is invited to a reception 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the gallery to continue the discussion
Matthew describes the series as “an exploration of the constant fluidity and complex dimensions of the immigrant identity, relevant as we consider the effects of technology and globalization.”
She said that according to the U.S. census there has been a 77 percent increase of residents from India relocated to Atlantic County.
Matthew’s exhibit is a multimedia piece using photographs and audio. It includes nine 4-by-6-foot framed photographs with a 10-minute audio loop of excerpts from interviews Matthew had with workers. Individual audio players with headphones will be available for visitors who wish to listen to the entire interview.
Matthews said the prints consist of two photographs that have been spliced and reassembled against a lenticular lens so that from one angle the viewer sees a portrait of the call center worker in his/her “work” clothes, usually perceived as more Western. From the other angle the worker appears in attire that is more native to India.
Gallery hours for this exhibition are 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday; and noon-4 p.m. Saturday.
The event is free. For information contact Denise McGarvey at denise.mcgarvey@stockton.edu, see www.stockton.edu or call (609) 652-4566.
